2.10 anti-ice open mic
you can’t fight fire with fire, but you can fight ice with fiery, fiery words and, more importantly, money. while we can all play a part in organizing within our own communities and hyper-local actions, if that’s too tall of a task, then you can also just donate to causes like this, this, or this. but if you feel like you need to get something in exchange for your donation other than maybe a free ticket to heaven, then come through to our open mic curated by charlotte robertson at 119 hester, where all tickets and drink proceeds will be donated to the Immigrant Defense Fund.
words
+how to unsuccessfully change the world+
be an irl micro-influencer: you know that problematic cousin who’s perpetually online or your old childhood friend who grew up to be super off? well, call ‘em up and talk to them. or shoot them a text if they’re really that bad. just don’t let up. keep making an intentional effort to connect and demonstrate your interest. focus less on trying to change their minds and more on trying to understand them, because if you can’t manipulate one conspiracy theorist, then you won’t be able to advance your own conspiracy theories on a wide scale.
get informed: today, we live in a world of alternative facts with typically the most compelling presentation of facts winning favor, so try your hand at distilling information. whether that be through investigative articles, comedic social media skits, diy zines, or yelling on the subway, it doesn’t matter. it never hurts for one more voice or opinion to jump into the fray.
utilize what’s at your disposal: if you’re rich, donate. if you’re a celebrity, use your platform (even if they make fun of you for trying). if you know rich people, steal from them and donate that money. if you know celebrities, hack them and use their platforms to spread vital information. if you’re not famous or rich, then commit yourself to getting rich and famous so your voice will actually matter.
stop waiting for a hero: no one’s coming; we have to save each other. mlk and malcolm x were assassinated before 40. what’s your excuse for having accomplished so little? we have more access and connectivity than ever before so get creative and get after it.
donate your time: start volunteering at a food bank, soup kitchen, or wherever you feel called to. then, after you’ve gone ten or so times you, can take a first date there and immediately win moral superiority.
take care of your environment: spend an hour a week walking around your neighborhood with a trash bag and a grabber tool. it’s small, but it takes a bit of the load of city workers and will make your neighbors happy. it’ll also help you beat those gentrification allegations.
don’t play oppression olympics: just because someone else struggles doesn’t mean your struggles don’t exist. the world is a big place, there’s enough sympathy room for everyone. individual experiences cannot be measured or quantified, but it is kind of weird that Black History Month is the shortest month, right?
talk to strangers: i know, i hate them, too, but every stranger is a potential ally or a convert for the cause. so, be open and warm, but make sure to listen more than you speak because it’s important to have more data on them than you, just in case you need to blackmail them in future.
don’t be a hypocrite: we’re all *ssholes. and it’s okay to call out other *ssholes when they’re acting up but in order for our critique to be valid we first we have to acknowledge our own bias and then we can claim to be reformed. from this humbled position, our words hold maximum weight because we’re considered to be “self-aware.“
just cheat: when all else fails, ask chat gpt.
