We laughed, we cried, and, ultimately, we watched. Through the dazzling medium of film, all those in attendance were transported to new worlds through the silver screen. Bearing witness to the magic of motion pictures reminds us all that not everything is what it seems.

Winter is a time for reflection and art serves as a reflection of all humanity; it only makes sense to merge the two and see some art on a cold day. The multimedia artist Alina Yakirevitch explores intimacy and the body with her solo exhibition Tongue Tied Diver featuring inquisitive photo portraiture and the debut of an original film. On Thursday night at 6pm, come by our Chinatown location (119 Hester St) for the opening reception of the exhibition, on view through January 21.

What’s inside of you? Beyond the blood and guts, there’s probably a lot more than you think. There’s original thought and creativity coursing through your veins in this very moment. The abstract artist Dylan Strong has generously chosen to share such vulnerability at his solo exhibition, There is Something Inside of Me. Join the artist for a live painting session on January 19, from 6-9pm. The next day, on January 20, at 4pm, the masterful painter and illustrator will be giving an artist talk about his process followed by a closing reception at our east village gallery at 77 e 3rd St.

The new year glow has worn off. Optimism has been lost in the bleak winter winds. Festive holidays are now in the rearview and you’re only faced with the darkness of a starless night in a city that against all odds has finally succumbed to slumber. Your steadfast resolutions have become distant memories, a shadow of yourself that you were never going to be. It’s time to settle into mid-January and accept the snowy abyss that awaits you for the next two months. There’s nothing left but the cold. No matter how many Wim Hoff videos you watch, you will not conquer the weather. You can’t breathe through blue lips and frozen fingertips when the blood has stopped flowing. That feeling of swelling tiredness and stagnation is not simply a roadblock to be conquered, but a titanic sized glacier that has claimed numerous casualties, most with souls far more impressive than your own. Resistance is futile. Inhale air that feels like it’s composed of little crystals that are eviscerating your insides and exhale for shortness of breath and more pain. If you were looking for hope, then turn back now. To accept and endure a winter in New York is not a story of survival or a riveting tale of perseverance, there is no great arc with a culminating act three or a satisfying ending where the protagonist comes out of a conflict with a newfound take on life. There is no lesson to be learned, things simply just are until they eventually aren’t. It’s a cycle of mundane and uninteresting daily tasks that seem to mimic the plot of a Groundhog’s Day type remake, but it’s even worse because the days keep moving forward, so you’re actually losing time. In theory, the short days and early nights should be the perfect opportunity to get ahead. Rather than hibernating, you can gather all your stashed creative acorns and grind them out into full fledged projects. Rise early and stay up late burying yourself in the hustle. And you finally have an acceptable reason to flake. No one wants to be dragged out to a shitty little bar in sub-freezing weather, so freely and confidently cancel on plans. You’ll actually be seen as a hero. Once one person in the group chat bails, there will be a cascading avalanche of half-baked excuses that disappoint that one over eager friend y’all have. But you know the truth, you’re not staying in to work, you’re staying in to rot on the couch and burn your eye sockets out with multiple screens, but luckily it’s real cold out so the frigid temperatures will keep your body fresh enough to be revived and thawed out when the sun does eventually rise. You’ll awake on the couch with a runny nose, cloudy mind, and the taste of unbrushed teeth on your tongue. The cold will have burrowed into your flesh through the holes of your favorite hoodie and taken hold of your skeletal and nervous system, sending uncontrollable shivers through your body. But that feeling of terror, confusion, and shame just means you're still alive, it’s cold out, and that one more day of winter is behind you.

I was looking at your coat. You were looking at my popcorn. Then we looked at each other. Maybe we can do that again sometime?

You: hot, crunchy, and covered in salt
Me: too weak and hungry to resist

From the moment you arrived, I was captivated. Unable to take my eyes and eventually hands off of you. You drew me in and kept me feasting at your altar all night. Some would call you a snack but no, you’re breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

If you’re cold, then that means someone else is also probably cold so why not hit them up? Then you can be cold together and everyone knows: two colds make one a little bit warmer, depending on which spoon you are.

While the rest of the world is out looking to get cuffed, shackle yourself to your goals and aspirations. There’s a reason flowers aren't seen during the winter: it’s because they’re busy getting swole for the spring.

First things first, build an igloo. You’ll need it later. Find a patch of perfectly yellow snow. Commit the spot to memory. Keep moving. One foot after the other. Draw something on the windshield of a car. If your first thought was to draw genitals, then spoiler alert: you’re basic. If your first thought was to draw Van Goh’s Starry Night, then you’re in the right place. Cut off your left ear muff, put it in a container filled with water, and leave it in the freezer overnight. Take the frozen earmuff outside and leave it somewhere that only you and Jack Frost would know where to find it. Whisper sweet nothings to the wind before spinning three times, then run in whatever direction your body leans to first. Run until you see a pigeon, then immediately stop and build a snow person. What you just experienced was art.

Some people wear coats, some coats wear people. All you can do is own the skin you're in because when it’s all said and done, it's not about who wore it first but who wore it best.

The cold is your body’s reminder that you’re not invincible, no matter how many fur coats you buy, trees you cut down, or fires you start. If you try to fight the cold with bare knuckles, you’ll lose ten out of ten times.

You say you love snow, but you salt your streets. You say you love snow, but you shovel your driveway. You say you love snow, but you stay inside. This is why I am afraid of snow, too.

The reason for seasons is so you can feel the air that you breathe in. In the absence of seasons, there is no weather, but simply outside and being. So whether or not you like it cold or hot, you should hope that seasons never stop.

You can dress for the occasion or you can dress for the day, but either way, eventually that new parka, beanie, and scarf will decay and all of your belongings will be thrown away.

An unseen layer has infinite potential. People will marvel at the thin covering of ice over a pond, but they are blind to the universe obscured below. Rushing the process can result in serious injury or death, but if you simply wait then the layers below will eventually be revealed.

Migration is a powerful concept that, in one instance, alluded and drove a young Holden Caulfied mad and, in another, gave Emilio Estevez great success as a youth hockey coach. So the question is not where the ducks go in the winter, but whether migration is running AWAY from home or running BACK home.
